Craft – Colouring in with gluing

Teller will need to cut up A4 green paper into 2 inch strips (across the short side) so it can be cut up and added to the colouring in page at one point.

How to assemble –

Children are given colouring in sheet and decorate as they like
Once decorated, the children are given strips of pre-cut paper to cut up into grass and glued to the bottom of the page

This module is based purely on the module created by Dr James Thomas, the only modification is in the area of sign language, i.e. following consultation with a speech pathologist, we moved towards providing sign language using the Auslan signbank.

Young and the Restless

This program was trialled in September 2010, and fully launched by mid October 2010 - it is a language play program that explores basic concepts like alphabet, numbers, colours, shapes, as well as having songs and activities that encourage body movement, designed to engage active 1 year olds.

Dr James Thomas, aka Mister Jim, kindly gave us permission to use his program format, we have modified the baby sign component to reflect the Auslan sign language.

Programs for babies

The Wyong Shire Library has been offering baby programs since late 2004, the initial program offered was Mother Goose (notes from modules used have been uploaded), Baby Bounce was introduced in 2008 and the most recent evolution of programs offered is based on those created by Dr James Thomas who visited Australia in October 2009 and more recently during June - August 2010.

Changes were made to the baby programs, as we found that the 0-2 year grouping was very successful and smaller babies were having a harder time of engaging with more active toddlers around them.

We now offer Itsy Bitsy Babies for the 0 - 12 month age group and Young and the Restless for the 12 - 24 month age group.

Module information from Young and the Restless will be added progressively as they are put together and all mOther Goose modules are available to access.

Mother Goose modules

The Mother Goose program ran for nearly 6 years, the primary audience was families who had a baby under the age of 2 years. The aim of the Mother Goose program was to model a way for parents / carers to share simple board books, songs and action rhymes with their babies to encourage a love of reading and language.

The program was run on a small group basis, providing resources for up to ten families per module. We ran each module for a four week period and we aimed to provide two modules during a given school term period. Sessions were run at our Lake Haven and Tuggerah branch libraries.

In September 2010, Mother Goose was replaced by two other baby / toddler programs devised by Dr James Thomas.

This section will outline the themed parties we have started to hold at the Wyong Shire libraries. We advertise the program to families with children approximately aged 4 to 10 years, and have found the ages most likely to attend being 4, 5, 6 depending on the theme.

We aim to provide the following at these events -

stories in book or other telling formats as best suit the theme
songs where possible
simple craft activities
games that match the theme
face painting if appropriate

Please note that these events are quite demanding of staff resources, we have run the first two party events with 3 or 4 staff and realised that it may be best to have 5 or 6 on hand.
