The aim of the Mother Goose program was to model a way for parents / carers to share simple board books, songs and action rhymes with their babies to encourage a love of reading and language.

The program was run on a small group basis, providing resources for up to ten families per module. We ran each module for a four week period and we aimed to provide two modules during a given school term period. Sessions were run at our Lake Haven and Tuggerah branch libraries.

In September 2010, Mother Goose was replaced by two other baby / toddler programs devised by Dr James Thomas.

Animal module

Beginning Song – Bend and stretch

(Suit actions to the words, with small babies– gently move their arms as they sit in your lap)

Bend and stretch, reach for the stars
There goes Jupiter, here comes Mars
Bend and stretch, reach for the sky
Stand on tip-e-toe, oh so high!

Action rhyme – Der Glumph

Der glumph went the little green frog one day (flick/stretch fingers out to the side of your face to make fan like shape)
Der glumph went the little green frog (flick fingers out again)
Der glumph went the little green frog one day (flick fingers out again)
And the frog went glumph, glumph, glumph (flash fingers out to side of your face)

But we all know frogs go - la-dee-da-dee-da (clap hands and wave from side to side)
La-dee-da-dee-da (repeat clap and wave)
La-dee-da-dee-da (repeat clap and wave)
We all know frogs go la-dee-da-dee-da (final clap and wave)
They don't go glumph, glumph, glumph!

1st Board book – Charlie and Lola's animals by Lauren Child

A simple board book that looks at various animals that well known characters come into contact with, beautifully illustrated in Child's inimitable way.

Action song – Here is the ostrich

Here is the ostrich, straight and tall (extend an arm above your head)
Nodding his head above us all (make your hand nod)
Here is the hedgehog, prickly and small (cross your fingers together to make an X shape)
Rolling himself into a ball (roll your hands into a ball)
Here is the spider scuttling around (a hand runs across the floor like an insect)
Treading so lightly across the ground
Here are the birds that fly so high (link thumbs together and make hands fly)
Spreading their wings across the sky
Here are the children fast asleep (hold hands together against one cheek as if asleep)
And in the night the owls do peep (make large circles with fingers around eyes like owl)
Too whit, too whoo

Nursery rhyme – Old MacDonald had a farm

Old MacDonald had a farm - E I E I O
And on that farm he had some pigs - E I E I O
With an oink, oink here
And an oink, oink there
Here an oink, there an oink, everywhere an oink, oink
Old MacDonald had a farm - E I E I O

And on that farm he had some cows - E I E I O
With a moo, moo here
And a moo, moo there
Here a moo, there a moo
Everywhere a moo, moo
Old MacDonald had a farm - E I E I O

2nd Board Book – Can you moo too? by David Wojtowycz

Each double page reveals a new animal who is happy to make a noise. We advertise the program to families with children approximately aged 4 to 10 years, and have found the ages most likely to attend being 4, 5, 6 depending on the theme.

We aim to provide the following at these events -

stories in book or other telling formats as best suit the theme

 songs where possible

 simple craft activities

 games that match the theme

 face painting if appropriate

Please note that these events are quite demanding of staff resources, we have run the first two party events with 3 or 4 staff and realised that it may be best to have 5 or 6 on hand.
